What are Nuees ardentes? (sp) what causes them, and which volcanic eruptions are they usually associated with

rocky Craig Savel

Hi Craig,

Nuees Ardentes means "glowing avalanche" (I think), and they are the same thing as pyroclastic flows--fast-moving mixtures of hot gas and ash.

See question #2 in the "Questions on volcano terminology" section of the "previously-asked questions" section of the "ask-a-volcanologist" section in VolcanoWorld. There is a more complete answer along with a couple of references.

Sincerely,

Scott Rowland
