View (eastward) of Haleakala crater, East Maui volcano. The crater walls, including the promontory in the middle far ground consist of post-shield alkalic lavas, now exposed by erosion. K1 and K2 indicate Ko'olau and Kaupo gaps, respectively, the valleys that coalesced to form the "crater". A third valley, Kipahulu almost joined the other two, and is separated from the crater by a thin septum (K3). The cones and flows in the crater floor are rejuvenation-stage volcanics.
