Activity uggested by Jane Kurtz

A poem entitled "Volcanoes" (to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb) contributed by a first grade teacher.

There was a little volcano
volcano, volcano
There was a little volcano
And this is how it grew...

One day it became a hill
a hill, a hill
One day it became a hill
And then it formed a mountain...

Over the years it grew, grew, grew
Grew, grew, grew, grew, grew, grew
Over the years it grew, grew, grew
Into a volcano...

Then one day there was some gas
Was some gas, was some gas
Then one day there was some gas
And then it started to roar...

When it roared it spit hot magma
Spit hot magma, spit hot magma
When it roared it spit hot magma
And then it trickled down...

Read these two poems, the first written by a high school student named Pat and the second by an 11-year-old named Kelly:

I.

The rusty tiger-waves pounce to the shore.
Caring for none but themselves,
they leap on each other's backs
trying to get to their prey
where they will gorge themselves
on the sand
and roll back,
satisfied.

II.

Night, a black cat
creeping up on you
with the moon
reflecting
his eyes.

From A Celebration of Bees: Helping Children to Write Poetry by Barbara Juster Esbensen (Holt)

Poems aren't about rhymes--they're about playing with words.

Make a list of all the words you can associate with volcanoes. Look at pictures of volcanoes. List all the ways volcanoes move. What are different parts of volcanoes like? What if a volcano were an animal? What if it were an insect? What if it were a person? Pick some of the words you like and use them in your poem. Here's one I tried:

The bear that lives deep in the earth
lumbers
rumbles
shudders
scoops up pawfuls of the mantle
and hurls them upward.
The hot rock pulses like music,
climbs like fire,
bursts out the seams where the earth is sewn together.
The bear sighs,
settles back
and sleeps.

When I was thinking about this poem, I went to a high school band concert and heard my son David play the trumpet in a jazz band. I heard a song called "The Grizzly Bear Rag" and decided that should probably be the title of my poem.

"Bye Town Bye"

By Trista LeBlanc
Brimley, MI
The treacherous volcano was
Behind the town. The gigantic
Volcano started to talk and
Squarm around. Humungous
Rocks started flowing down
Into the town. BOOM, BOOM, BOOM
The boiling lava started to ooz out.
The people frantically tried to get
Out before the lava unleashed into
The town. IT EXPLODED! Everything
Was gone from 10 miles within
The volcano. Bye Town Bye!!

"Poem"

By Candy
Brimley, MI
The lava is flowing.
It's deeply glowing.
The fear is growing.
Sounds like someone's bowling.

"Poem"

Volcanic explosion
Ominously erupting
Lava pools and
Creeping landslides
Are causing
No way
Out!

"Terror in the Village"

By Jordan
Brimley, MI
There I was alone in the Darkness,
Everything was peaceful in the village.
All of a sudden we heard a
Monstrous sound.

The ground started
Rumbling and the people started
Screaming!

Lava started oozing down the
Volcano towards the village.
The clouds darkened and the
Tortuous lava started pouring into
The city.

"The Nightmare"

by Angela Davis
Brimley, MI
The firey eruption
Smokey,
Humongous,
Scorching flames
For many men, women
And children
Are left in the descended
Nightmare that haunts
Them for life.

A Poem

by Terry Dover, Age 14

Volcanos Ahead
Once I went on a journy
I was not about to turny
A volcano was what I wanted
So, a volcano I hunted
From country to country I did look
till finally one day I got to close the book
In a place called Portland I had found
A volcano that had that sound
Yes volcano's ahead I hear it now
I think it was a great big pow
Time for me to go
and for this volcano to blow

A Tribute to Volcanoes

By Chong Kezheng, Age 13
1M Raffles Institution

Thou lying on a fault line
Thine smoke is so divine
Fine ash shot through thy tops
Help nourish our precious crops
There were times when thy land
Was our only choice and friend
For it was forever rich and cheap
Agriculture flourished on the slopes so steep

The magma flowed out through thy vents
Turned into lava, added to continents
Formed many islands in the oceans
Where we live on thy natural formations
It is thou who added to the water
To fill our oceans and atmosphere
Of which if never made
Us beings would forever fade

The pioneer species continue evolving
Protected in thy slopes of severe steeping
Protected from the wrath of nature
Man and livestock, fear's caricature

In the tourist industry
"It's Mt Fuji I want to see!"
Thine beauty and excitement
An endless praising comment
The tourism thy generates
Plus mineral deposits thou creates
Continuously benefits our economy
As we boom away from poverty

Thine landscape forever lovely
Attracting flocks to view thee

A Poem

by Luis Galleguillos
There She Blows!
Kabooom! Sizzle and hisss,
We hear her coming to kiss the ground
From deep below gasping for air
To remember the salty sea taste
she runs refreshed by the rushing wind
And make us tremble and put us in our place

A Poem

by Jenny from Australia
The volcano erupted
With a gigantic boom!
Black smoke filled the sky
Like a chimney on a cold winters day

Tears filled everyones' eyes
As they tried to escape
But they couldn't
They just couldn't

Thump, thump, thump
Their hearts were racing
Lava poured through the small village
As if a giant had spilt his drink

The people fled for their lives
But the lava had beaten them
And as it oozed down the road
The people realized that there was no escape

Yells and screams filled the village
As the lava crawled quietly and slowly in
And they knew that this was the end
Of the end.
