Bezymianny volcano, Kamchatka,
Soviet Republic: Close view of the lava dome growing in the crater of
Bezymianny Volcano. The black area on the left side of the dome is an
actively extruding lava flow. The lava dome has been growing
intermittently since the cataclysmic eruption in 1956.
Lassen Peak is the only other
volcano in the Cascade chain that has erupted in this century. In 1914,
there was a series of large eruptions. Ashfall was recorded as far as
200 miles from the volcano.
Novarupta lava dome, Katmai
National Monument, Alaska: The lava dome was extruded following the
largest explosive eruption on earth in the 20th century.
Redoubt volcano, Alaska: Lava
dome in the summit vent of Redoubt Volcano, Alaska. A series of lava
domes were extruded and destroyed during eruptive episodes between
December 14, 1989, and April 21, 1990.
South Sister, Oregon: Series of
lava domes erupted from along a dike (fissure) extending south from South
Sister volcano, Oregon. Mount Jefferson, Oregon, is visible in the
distance.
