Grylloblatids are sometimes
described as a "cockroach-cricket," These insects were once thought to be
extremely rare. Cave biologists have since found that they are more
common than was first thought.Grylloblatids are unique because they have body fluids that act as antifreeze. Bug biologists (entomologists) think that at the end of the last ice age these creatures moved into caves as the world's climate became drier and warmer.
These insects now live underground most of the year. They go outside only during the winter and early spring. They look for insects which have been numbed by the cold and have fallen on the snow. If you look carefully you may see a grylloblatid in Ape Cave.
