Mount St. Helens is the youngest of
the seven active Cascade Volcanoes. These towering composite volcanoes of
the Cascade Range are the most recent evidence of volcanic activity in
the Pacific Northwest.
A composite volcano is a steep
sided, often symmetrical cone. It is constructed of alternating layers of
lava flow, ash, and other volcanic debris. Composite volcanoes often
erupt explosively. They pose considerable danger to nearby life and
property.
