Many frogs and toads survived the
ashfall because they were sheltered. They were underground, beneath
logs, in muddy lake bottoms or in rock crevices.
Frogs and toads were more likely to
survive because they breed often, and live in a variety of environments
during their various life stages.
Some long-toed salamanders
(Ambystoma macrodactylum) survived because they were below ground or
under the bark of rotten logs.
Olympic salamander (Rhyacotriton
olympicus) adults survived in rock crevices along stream sides. Young
stream dwelling salamanders perished in ash-smothered stream bottoms.
Cascade frogs (Rana cascadae)
survived the ashfall deposits. At that time of year, they were
hibernating in the muddy bottoms of lakes.
