Ashfall, Bird Survivors

The ashfall in the forests only temporarily displaced the birds.

The types and numbers of birds found in the ashfall forests were similar to those found in neighboring forests untouched by the ashfall.

Northern flickers (Colaptes auratus) continued to searched for ants around the bases of rotten logs.

The gray jay (Perisoreus canadensis), also known as the camp robber, was very common in ashfall forests. There it fed on seeds, berries, and insects.
