Blowdown, Amphibian Survivors

Surviving toads, frogs, and salamanders were sheltered underground, beneath logs, in lake bottom mud, or in rock crevices. Those living or hibernating in ice-covered lakes survived in huge numbers.

Frogs and toads quickly reproduced and repopulated the area.

In the summer, the shorelines of blast zone lakes are covered with masses of tadpoles and young toads.
