During, Pyroclastic Flows

The area most heavily affected by the 1980 eruptions was the valley floor directly in front of the crater. Hot mixtures of volcanic gas, pumice, and ash are known as pyroclastic flows. During the May 18th eruption, pyroclastic flows swept down the north flank of the volcano. They burned and buried everything in their path.

These pyroclastic flows moved very fast and were very hot. In their path, no plants or animals survived.
