Standing Dead, Insects and Spider Survivors

Ants were the most visible insect survivors in the standing dead forest. Those nesting below ground or inside logs on the forest floor were protected from the hot gasses. Their continued survival was often dependent on the recovery of plants and their sugars. The plant sugars are an important part of the ants' diet.
