Cerros del Rio is a monogenetic volcanic field made of about 60 cinder-spatter cones and their associated lava flows. The volcanic field is to the southeast of Valles Caldera, just southeast of White Rock Canyon, in the Rio Grande Rift, and 10 miles (15 km) west of Santa Fe. The volcanic field is about 12 miles (19 km) north-south and 5 miles (8 km) east-west. Eruptions began 2.9 million years ago and continued to 2.2 million years ago. This view is to the south-southeast with the volcanic field near the center. White Rock Canyon is obscured by the clouds.
