
Purace is an active volcano. It has erupted at least 12 times this century with the most recent eruption in 1977. Purace consists of a dacitic shield capped by a andesitic cone. A 1-2 mile (2-3 km) wide fault zone trends northwest across the volcano. Sulphur of magmatic origin is mined on the volcano. The elevation at the summit is about 15,000 feet (4,600 m) and Purace is located at 76.4N, 46.5W. In this SIR-C radar image north is to the right.
