Turrialba is a stratovolcano with at least four historic eruptions. The first was in 1853. Explosive eruptions in 1864 and 1866 generated pyroclastic flows. Both eruptions were phreatic. The 1866 eruption also produced mudflows. None of the historic eruptions caused damage or fatalities.
