Pulaweh, Lesser Sunda Islands

This Space Shuttle photo looks west along the central part of the island
of
Flores. Paluweh, a stratovolcano, forms the island just north (right) if
the main island. Paluweh has erupted seven times since 1928. Most
eruptions
are moderate to moderate-large (VEI=2-3) in size. Three of the eruptions
produced lava flows. A large landslide which accompanied the 1928
explosive
eruption generated a tsunami. The tsunami killed 128 people. The tsunami
waves were 15-30 feet (5-10 m) high. Tephra killed 98 people. One person
was killed and three injured during the 1964 eruption. Shuttle photo
