Maug, Mariana Islands

Location: 20.1N, 145.0E
Elevation: 650 feet (200 m)

The three small islands are the rim of the submerged summit crater of Maug volcano. The volcano is made of pyroclastic rocks and thin layers of tholeiitic basalt. Submarine domes on the crater floor are the youngest features at Maug. Photograph by Frank Trusdell, U.S. Geological Survey, May 1992.

The 250 ft long ship R/VT.G. Thompson inside the crater of Maug. The southern entrance to the crater can be seen behind the ship.
