The Pinacate monogenetic field is roughly circular, covers an area of about 2000 square kilometers, and includes more than 300 separate vents. Most of the vents are cinder cones, some with associated lava flows. A small percentage of the vents are tuff cones and maars, indicating that the rising magma contacted groundwater to produce highly explosive eruptions. The Pinacate field is in a very hot and desolate part of the world and doesn't get visited very often. VolcanoWorld leader Dr. Chuck Wood has produced one of the more comprehensive studies of this interesting place.
