Socorro
Socorro is a volcanic island made up of numerous volcanic units and is
another of the Revilligigedo Islands. It has erupted 5 times since 1848 but
little is known of the first 4 of these. The most recent eruption took
place in 1993 from a vent about 4.5 km west of the island. The Global
Volcanism Network Bulletin for January of 1993 describes an area of
disturbed water within which hot rocks were rising and floating while they
still gave off hot gases. It was difficult to closely observe the activity
but helicopter reconnaissance indicated that even though no new land was
formed, the summit of the erupting area was just below the ocean surface.
