An Easy Peek at Puu Oo (Grades K-6)
If you are lucky enough to live on the Island of Hawaii or come for
a visit, it is easy to see
Puu Oo,
weather permitting. Follow Highway 11 about 19.5 miles (31.2 km)
southwest of Hilo. Near the Glenwood county park (opposite the Hirano
store and Amoco station), the forest is cleared and provides a view to
Puu Oo. The cone is 7.5 miles (12 km) to the south. On a typical day, a
cloud of gas rises above the cone. The gas cloud adds to the vog
(volcanic fog) problem.
