In the Park (Grades K-12)
The Jaggar Museum
contains numerous displays that explain the monitoring methods employed
by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
A short walk along the Earthquake Trail leads to the Waldron Ledge
overlook. The overlook provides an excellent view across the caldera to
Halemaumau Crater. Note the benchmark on the stone barrier. This
location is part of a network to measure deformation of the summit of the
volcano. As you drive along the park roads you might notice sets of
yellow dots. These dots are used by survey crews that measure ground
displacement.
