Activity 7. In the Park

A film on the 1959 eruption at Kilauea Iki is available to school groups. The film shows the evolution of the eruption from a fissure to a central vent. The film also shows spectacular lava fountains and the formation of Puu Puai. To schedule a viewing, call the Division of Interpretation at (808) 967-7184.

Numerous vents can be visited along Crater Rim Drive. The locations and features of the vents are described in Hazlett (1990). At each vent, students can describe the size, shape, and deposits (tephra, spatter, lava, etc.) of the vent.
