World Organization of Volcano Observatories (WOVO)

Seismic Research Unit, University of the West Indies

The Seismic Research Unit is responsible for monitoring earthquakes and volcanic activity in the volcanic Lesser Antilles (except Guadeloupe and Martinique) and earthquakes only in the rest of the English-speaking Caribbean. Monitoring activity is focused on the recently active Soufriere volcano in St. Vincent. Other volcanic centres equipped with telemetered stations are Mt. Misery (St. Kitts), Nevis Peak (Nevis), Soufriere Hills (Montserrat), Dominica (at least ten volcanoes within 15 km of the station), Qualibou (St Lucia) and Mt. St. Catherine (Grenada). Volcanic hazards maps have been prepared for most of these volcanoes and are steadily updated as part of a long-term project. Photograph of La Soufriere by Richard Fiske, April 22, 1979. The column is about 4 miles (6 km) tall. Photo courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Seismic Research Unit is part of the University of the West Indies and is supported by eleven (11) governments in the Caribbean area.
